The first black square on a white background was painted by Kazimir Malevich in 1915, giving rise to Suprematism. The Black Square is a symbol of 20th-century avant-garde art.<\/p>\n
The movement advocated maximum simplification of forms and the supremacy of basic shapes and colours. It broke with all figurativeness in art and proclaimed the end of narrative, freed art from the obligation to tell stories about the world and people, and rejected art that served religion, the state or society in favour of art that was supposed to awaken in people a world of spiritual experiences rather than rational interpretations.<\/p>\n
Malevich said that Black Square is a naked icon, devoid of frames and context, affecting the viewer through emotional rather than aesthetic impressions. Its power lies in the silence it exudes.<\/p>\n
\u2018The Black Square is one of my most personal and powerful confrontations with contemporary art. The scarf design is a tribute to the artist and my interpretation of this work.\u2019<\/p>\n
